The All-in-One Company - Hedgehog Day

Happy Hedgehog day! Did you know...

1. A group of hedgehogs is called an “array.” Most people don’t know this though. This is because Hedgehogs are solitary creatures, which means they like to live alone. 2. Each hedgehog has between 5000 and 7000 quills! 3.Hedgehogs rely on hearing and smell because they have very poor eyesight. 4.Hedgehogs got their name from their preferred habitat—garden hedges—and the little cute pig-like grunts they make. 5.Hedgehogs can hibernate, but not all do. This makes them only 1 of the 3 animals that hibernate in Great Britain! 6.There used to be such a thing as the International Hedgehog Olympic Games (IHOG)! This consisted of sprints, hurdles, and floor exercises. 7.Hedgehog litters can range between one and eleven. The little ones only remain with their mothers for only four to seven weeks before heading out on their own.

The Northumbrian Hedgehog Rescue Trust is a rescue centre in Northumberland and a dedicated team of volunteers do their utmost to assist in caring for these adorable little creatures until they are ready to be released back into the wild.

Each year, the Trust care for between 300 and 400 hedgehogs and release around 90% of them back into the wild to produce the next generation.

The Trust have no other funding other than occasional grants, personal donations and monies raised from their own fundraising activities. They are then greatly appreciative of anything other donations they receive.

Cleveland Hedgehog Preservation Society (CHPS)  looks after hundreds of abandoned, orphaned or injured hedgehogs every year.

Chairman Chris Firth and his wife Barbara looked after hedgehogs for over 16 years at their home in Billingham and now support the society’s 86 members and 10 volunteer carers.

“We’ve had calls in the middle of the night from the fire brigade about hedgehogs trapped down drains and one Christmas we were looking after 22 – as well as our family and friends,” he said.

Hedgehogs, like Titch, born in the second litter of the year are especially vulnerable – particularly if they get lost or their mothers are killed. “We call them the Autumn orphans,” said Chris. “They struggle to put on enough weight before hibernation and do not have the fat reserves to survive. Keeping them warm helps them to get through. If anybody comes across a hedgehog which looks injured or ill please take it to a vet. It will be treated and then passed on to us for care.

He added: “We would like to thank The All-in-One Company for its generosity in providing us with the fleece blankets it’s donated to our charity. These will greatly assist us in the rehabilitation of orphaned or injured hedgehogs prior to being released back into the wild. Without this kindness and support we would be unable to continue helping the local hedgehog population.”
