Onesie Get Your Game On!

The 23rd July marks the start of the third largest multi-sport event in the world - The Commonwealth Games.

The Commonwealth Games will be taking place in Glasgow this year.

With 6,500 athletes, 70 countries, 17 sports, and 11 days - not to mention the Queen's Baton Relay in Scotland; 40 Days, 400 communities AND 4,000 Baton-bearers, it's not a one to miss!

Only six teams have attended every Commonwealth Games: Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand, Scotland, and Wales.

Although there are 53 members of the Commonwealth of Nations, 70 teams participate in the Commonwealth Games, as everyone likes to play under their own flag, for example the four home nations of England - England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales all compete under their own flag, not to mention Northern Ireland, which also competes separately under it's own flag.

It all started in 1911 when the games were referred to as the Inter-Empire Championships.

In 1930 the games were then known as the British Empire Gamesin which 11 nations participated. Unfortunately, the games were interrupted by the Second World War and the 1942 Games and the 1946 Games were abandoned.

Over 1000 athletes participated in the 1958 Games, which were now known as the British Empire and Commonwealth Games as over thirty teams took part for the first time.

The Games were named the British Commonwealth Games in 1970, and then finally, to what we know them as now, the Commonwealth Games began in 1978.

Table Tennis, Rugby Sevens, Lawn Bowls, Aquatics, Badminton, Netball, Triathlon, Athletics, Cycling, Judo, Squash, Wrestling, Shooting, Boxing, Gymnastics, Hockey and Weightlifting, are the 17 sports that will take place in this years games.
