The Perfect Gift This Valentines

BRP091012-827   Valentines Day... A time when people show feelings of love and affection... Valentines Day is celebrated world wide, and falls on February 14th. Most people around the world celebrate Valentines Day by showering their special someone with lots of love and affection - whether it be a sweet picnic in the park, a 5 star meal at a restaurant, or even a marriage proposal.  Greeting cards, chocolates, jewellery or flowers (often roses) are popular gifts to send and receive.  Valentines Day doesn't always have to be about  your partner, in some cultures, Valentines Day is a time to appreciate friendships. Valentine's Day in Finland refers to “Friend's day”, which is more about remembering all friends rather than just romance. Valentine's Day in Guatemala is known as Day of Love and Friendship. Many sources believe that the origin of Valentines Day stems from the story of St Valentine. St Valentine was a Roman priest who was martyred on or around February 14 in the year 270 CE. It is a mystery on how he actually became the patron saint of lovers  but one theory is that the church used the day of St Valentine’s martyrdom to Christianize the old Roman Lupercalia, a pagan festival held around the middle of February. The ancient ceremony included putting girls’ names in a box and letting the boys draw them out. Couples would then be paired off until the following year.Eventually the custom of sending anonymous cards or messages to those whom one admired became the accepted way of celebrating Valentine’s Day.Hearts, the colours red and pink, roses, images and statues of cupids, and cupids’ bows and arrows symbolize the feeling of romance and love on Valentine’s Day. Cupid is also very symbolic on Valentines Day. Cupid is usually portrayed as a small winged figure with a bow and arrow. In mythology, he strikes the hearts people with his bow and arrow and they fall in love. 'Struck by Cupid's bow' is a phrase sometimes used to describe people who have fallen in love. The perfect gift this Valentines Day is, a onesie!
