Northumbrian Hedgehog Rescue

Northumbrian Hedgehog Rescue A lovely lady from the Northumbrian Hedgehog Rescue Trust came to visit us last week to collect the Hedgehog blankets we made for the trust. The Northumbrian Hedgehog Rescue Trust is a rescue centre in Northumberland and a dedicated team of volunteers do their utmost to assist in caring for these adorable little creatures until they are ready to be released back into the wild. Each year, the Trust care for between 300 and 400 hedgehogs and release around 90% of them back into the wild to produce the next generation. The Trust have no other funding other than occasional grants, personal donations and monies raised from their own fundraising activities. They are then greatly appreciative of anything other donations they receive. Here at The All-in-One Company, we collect a huge amount of onesie offcuts from all the orders we cut. Our fabulous team have made gorgeous little blankets to keep the rescue hedgehogs nice and cosy. (You may remember a little while back we donated some blankets to the Hedgehogs at CHPS) She thanked us with this GORGEOUS hedgehog keyring crocheted by a friend of hers. The profit made from the merchandise is then used to cover the costs of caring for the adorable little ones. Here's a few tips from The Northumbrian Hedgehog Trust so you can help the Hedgehogs out in the wild. Hedgehogs are a Gardner's Friend
  • Provide water and meat based dog/cat food in jelly.
  • Provide a shelter (an upturned box with a 13cm hole would suffice)
  • Provide a 13cm hole in fences and walls to allow Hedgehogs to travel through.
  • Ensure ponds have an escape route
  • If you must - use organic slug pellets
  • Keep netting 20cm above the ground
You need to assist when:
  • A hedgehog is out during the day
  • A hedgehog is asleep away from it's nest
  • An Orphan - after surveillance - is alone
  • A hedgehog has been hit by a car
  • A leg appears damaged
  • A hedgehog weighs under 600 grams in cold weather
  • A hedgehog is dragging both hind legs
  • A hedgehog has open wounds
  • A hedgehog is caught in netting
  • Any 'apparent' orphan is showing injury.
Leave alone when:
  • A hedgehog is in it's nest
  • An uninjured hedgehog weighs over 600 grams
  • 'Apparent' Orphans are in a nest
