British brands & their designer onesies

The Christmas jumper has gone from being a garment favoured by Ron Weasley’s mum to something we all choose to wear during the festive period if we want to fit in. We now love the ironic tackiness that comes with wearing jumpers featuring a red nose that lights up or felted antlers and the effect they can have when everyone in the family or in the office wears one simultaneously, but let’s be honest, the Christmas jumper has never really been considered a luxury item – until now.

Back in November, twelve British designers were asked apply their own bespoke Christmas designs to gorgeous hand-knitted jumpers from Wool and the Gang, to be auctioned on the annual Christmas jumper day for the charity Save the Children. Unsurprisingly, no two designs were the same as each designer put their own classic spin on their jumper to create twelve unique, luxury Christmas jumpers. This got us thinking: what if these fantastic British designers were to create bespoke designer all-in-ones too? We chose three of our favourite successful British designers, studied their Christmas jumper creations and designed three bespoke onesies we think they would adore…

Burberry

British Designer Onesie 1

A British fashion house that has been distributing clothing, fashion accessories and perfume since 1856, Burberry is most famous for its distinctive tartan pattern and its beautiful trench coats. Over the years, Burberry has rebranded itself several times through various magazines but has always retained a penchant for check prints. However, when it came to designing their luxury Christmas jumper, Burberry chose to cover it in red hearts and stitch black silhouettes of iconic British buildings on the front. The message on the jumper read: ‘Burberry, with love.’

When designing our all-in-one for Burberry we decided to stick with the colours they had chosen for their Christmas jumper and so chose vanilla, black and red Polar Fleece. We tried to stick with a simple, classic design reminiscent of Burberry’s timeless collections and included front pockets similar to those of their trench coats. We personalised the onesie further by adding ‘Burberry, with love’ on the back in hot chocolate coloured italic writing. Can you see this onesie on the catwalk this spring?

Vivienne Westwood

When we think of Vivienne Westwood we think of bright neon colours, splashes of gold, streaks of black and a mishmash of materials. Dame Vivienne Westwood is the woman who brought modern punk and new wave fashion to the catwalks. Westwood intended to take a style reserved for those who refused to follow popular trends and use it to shock the fashion world, and that she certainly did. Even today the public still gasp and Westwood’s latest collections, and although her Christmas jumper lacked most of the colours she is so famed for, it certainly put her message across clearly. Her jumper simply read in thick, black ribbon: ‘Save The Arctic.’ British Designer Onesie 2

For the Vivienne Westwood onesie we decided to use various colours to highlight the punk roots of the brand and included the mustard yellow she seems to favour. Although quite different to the jumper she created, we have included the same message on the back of our onesie – as we did with Burberry – as it is clearly something that means a lot to her and her brand. We can totally imagine Vivienne Westwood taking to the town in this all-in-one, can you?

Alexander McQueen

Lee Alexander McQueen was known for his impeccable tailored look, a style he became familiar with and favoured ever since his time as an apprentice on Savile Row. After his apprenticeship at the age of 20 he moved on to Angels & Bermans – a theatrical costumiers – where his already burgeoning reputation was only enhanced. Similar to Westwood, when McQueen first entered the fashion world he intended to shock and introduced controversial pieces such as trousers nicknamed ‘bumsters.’ However, his designs soon settled down to become a comfortable mix of chic tailoring and distinctive one-offs. The Christmas jumper created by the designers at McQueen was focussed on maximum comfort, mixing several fabrics while sticking only to cream colours. British Designer Onesie 1

For McQueen’s onesie we too decided to opt for neutral colours but included a mix of fabrics to reflect the jumper they created. The main body of the onesie is made of Snuggle Bunny natural Micro Cuddle, while the hood, inner ears, pockets and mittens are made of vanilla Micro Fleece. We think this onesie looks the cosiest out of the three, just as McQueen’s Christmas jumper does, and we left the feet free just in case McQueen wishes to pair the onesie with pair of killer statement heels…
